Interview Tips

To help you prepare for your next interview, here are some key tips from Talent STEM to shine in any interview setting, whether face-to-face, telephone or video.

Research the company

Understand the organisation’s mission, values, and recent achievements to show genuine interest and tailor your responses.

Know your CV

Be ready to discuss your experience, skills, and achievements in detail, especially those relevant to the role.

Prepare examples

Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure answers about your past work, particularly scientific projects or problem-solving.

Practise common questions

Rehearse responses to questions like “Tell me about yourself” or “Why do you want this role?” to build confidence.

Dress appropriately

For face-to-face or video interviews, opt for smart, professional attire suited to the company culture; keep it neat for telephone calls too.

Test technology

For video or telephone interviews, check your internet, audio and camera in advance to avoid technical issues.

Choose a quiet space

Ensure your environment is free from distractions, especially for telephone or video calls.

Be punctual

Arrive early for face-to-face interviews or log in five minutes ahead for virtual ones to demonstrate reliability.

Listen carefully

Pay attention to questions and pause briefly before answering to provide thoughtful responses.

Show enthusiasm

Let your passion for the role and the scientific field shine through in your tone and answers.

Ask questions

Prepare two or three insightful questions about the role, team or company to show engagement (e.g., “What does success look like in this position?”).

Mind your body language

For face-to-face or video interviews, sit up straight, maintain eye contact and avoid fidgeting.

Speak clearly

Keep a steady pace and articulate your words, especially on telephone interviews where tone is key.

Take notes

Jot down key points during the interview (if appropriate) to refer to later or in follow-up discussions.

Follow up

Send a brief, polite thank-you email after the interview to reinforce your interest and professionalism.

Best of luck!  If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us at Talent STEM.
